FYI: Prescribed Burning To Resume in Eldorado National Forest Placerville, CA - The Forest Service is planning to resume prescribed burning in the Eldorado National Forest as soon as air quality and vegetation conditions are right, possibly next week. Residents of Pollock Pines and travelers along Highway 50 will see smoke rising from a 250 acre prescribed burn planned on Peavine Ridge about a mile north of Pollock Pines and west of the community of White Meadows.  The Peavine Ridge prescribed burn will provide additional wildfire protection to Pollock Pines and White Meadows. An information board with details about the burn will be posted at Sierra Vista Shell Station in Pollock Pines.
The Forest Service also plans to continue burning along the Mormon Emigrant Trail, west of Silver Fork Road.
This type of fire is called prescribed burning since each fire has a burn plan that lays out the objective of the fire and a prescription of factors that must be in place before a fire is ignited. The plan includes weather, air quality, condition of the vegetation, fire lines to contain the fire, public notification and personnel needed to accomplish the burning.
Prescribed burning removes unwanted vegetation that could contribute to future wildfires leaving the forest floor and spreading through tree tops.
General information about this year’s proposed prescribed burning activities is posted on the Eldorado National Forest website at: Twitter updates on prescribed burning activities are available @EldoradoNF.
The Forest Service must comply and coordinate with state and local county air pollution control districts. Smoke may continue for days after actual ignition because of the large scale of these projects. The Forest Service recommends that people living in or near the forest contact the nearest ranger station if they have respiratory illness or think the smoke might adversely affect them. These people will be placed on a “Sensitive Persons List” and will be notified of impending prescribed burning projects.
