MASTER GARDENERS PRESENT: SMALL BACKYARD ORCHARDS - Yes, it is only October. But, before you know it, the season for planting bare-root fruit trees will be here. Start planning now and it will pay off in the years to come.  Some questions you may be asking yourself: Where should I plant my fruit trees?  What types grow well here?  What varieties taste best?  Does the soil need any special preparation?  Do I need a male and a female plant?  When and how do I prune? When do I fertilize and what do I use? In addition to the traditional fruit trees grown in the foothills, some citrus may be appropriate for your property. UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County will be discussing these topics at their Public Education class, “Small Backyard Orchards” on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 9am-Noon. VIA Caltrans and CDFW (California Department of Fish and Wildlife)
BETWEEN NOW and DECEMBER, deer and other wildlife are more susceptible than usual to vehicle collisions.
"Soon, deer will start their annual migrations to winter range, bucks will be preoccupied competing for mates, and bears will be searching for food in preparation for hibernation. Such natural behaviors can lead these animals into the way of unsuspecting drivers."
"Drivers can improve their own safety by simply slowing down and remaining alert while driving. We are committed to safety while being mindful of the environment, using signage, fencing, and under crossings to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions along roadways, especially in wildlife corridors.”
