CALICO CHRISTMAS IN AMADOR CITY - Saturday, December 5 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. downtown Amador City celebrates Christmas.  The town decorates for the season with fresh hand-made pine garlands and Christmas lights hung from century old buildings.
Christmas music will be performed to brighten spirits on old Highway 49 and bring a festive air.
On the patio in front of the Imperial Hotel guests can take in artisan libations to ward off the winter chill.
At 5:30 pm there will be a tree lighting on the bridge over Amador Creek and Christmas carols. Shops will stay open late. Three local winery tasting rooms will welcome visitors.
Throughout the day there will be an array of Christmas comestibles available. Andrae’s Bakery offers an espresso bar, decadent baked goods, artisan breads and Sacramento craft beers.
Buffalo Chips Restaurant renders handmade pies, an old-fashioned soda fountain and great burgers.  After the tree lighting they feature a traditional polenta dinner served with Italian chicken sausage and mixed greens, finished with bread pudding and hot buttered rum sauce.
A variety of small bite desserts prepared by classic pastry chef Ingrid Fraser will be available at Feist Wines.
Select stores offer discounts and shoppers can stop by The Kitchen Store for home-made cookies.
Like the textile “calico” from where this celebration gets its name the joy of Amador City is its authenticity and raw, unprocessed nature.

MASTER GARDENERS PRESENT: RECOVERING BURNED LANDS AFTER THE BUTTE FIRE - On Saturday, November 21, 9:00 a.m. – noon, Join UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County and speakers Amy Rocha, from Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), and Sean Kriletich, Paloma Pollinators, in a class to learn how to help your lands recover from the Butte Fire.

Dear Amador County Transportation Commissioners (and to whom it concerns):
With deep regret, I must inform you that Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill (AB) 652 (Cooley) into law on October 8th, 2015. State Route (SR) 16 will now be relinquished to Sacramento County, will no longer be included in the California Interregional Roadway System, and will have no protections for inter-regional travel.
There are no 'silver linings' in this.  However, I must express our gratitude to Assemblyman Frank Bigelow for hearing our concerns and demonstrating the courage to take the remarkable step of rising before the California Assembly to speak personally in opposition to AB 652.  His stand against the powerful development interests behind the Bill convinced 23 other members of the Assembly (along with Chairman Beall of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee) to join him in voting against the SR 16 relinquishment proposal.
Unfortunately, Assemblyman Bigelow's efforts were not enough to convince Governor Brown to use his veto power to help us.
I am sorry that we were not able to stop this from happening and I am equally sorry for all of those who depend on this route and will suffer from this needless action to remove interregional functionality from SR 16.
I wish I could have brought you better news.
Sincerely,
John Gedney
Executive Director, ACTC

2015 ANGEL TREE PROJECT: DONATE UNWRAPPED GIFTS
The Camanche Lake & Upcountry Community Centers are coordinating the annual Amador County Angel Tree project.  Last year, Angel Tree provided holiday gifts to over 700 children between the ages of 0 and 17 years.  It is the generosity of folks like you that makes the project so successful!  We are currently requesting unwrapped gifts for children of all ages.  Angels, printed with a local child’s holiday wish list, are available on Angel Trees at a variety of businesses throughout Amador County.  You can sponsor a child by choosing an angel and purchasing a desired gift, or you can make a monetary donation and Community Center staff will purchase the gift on your behalf.  In addition, if someone would like to purchase a generic gift to donate, we will do our best to match the gift with the requests of the unsponsored angels.
Please drop off your unwrapped gifts at the Jackson Elks Lodge, the Upcountry Community Center, Camanche Lake Community Center, Clark’s Corner, Pine Grove Video or Wal-Mart by December 14th.  As you shop and do business locally, you will find the Angel Trees as well as additional gift drop-off location sites.  Thank you so much for your time and generosity.  With your help, the children in our community will have a very happy holiday season!
For more information or to sponsor a child, please call 296-2785.

ACRA NEEDS SPONSORS for the After School Program at the Hub! The After School Program at the Hub in Jackson has attracted 34 students who come to the facility every Monday through Thursday, from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.  And this number is growing.  ACRA must now keep four personnel on staff there for proper supervision.  In order to pay for additional personnel, ACRA is requesting payment of $2.00 per student per day, which covers approximately half of our personnel costs.  Other costs to run the After School Program include the purchase of healthy snacks and supplies for activities.
Many of our students come from low income families who cannot afford this fee each day.  Despite generous donations from the Jackson Rancheria and private citizens amounting to over $4,000, ACRA does not have sufficient funding to keep this program going.  We are asking the community to help by sponsoring one of more of our students who cannot afford the fee.  A sponsorship of $50.00 per month will keep one student in our program.  Help ACRA to keeps these children in a safe environment during the after school hours.
Call Carolyn at 223-6379 or ACRA at 223-6349.  Or you can mail your donation to Amador County Recreation Agency, 10877 Conductor Blvd, Suite 100, Sutter Creek, CA  95685
Thank you so much for your support!

RIGHTURN: VOLUNTEERS & MENTORS NEEDED - The Kiwanis Club of Amador County will be sponsoring a Righturn.Club at a local elementary school. We are looking for assistance in getting this off the ground. We need mentors, facilitators, and helpers. The 10 week program, meeting after school twice a week for 90 minutes this fall, will give obese kids the help they need to make a right turn in their eating habits and fitness. If interested contact founder, Thomas Moraitis.  Thomas@Righturn.Club.
You don't have to be an athlete, a teacher, or in perfect shape to be a mentor. HS and college students, retired folks, people who have flexible schedules at work are ideal. The helpers will prepare healthy snacks for 40 twice a week, food provided and deliver to school. The facilitators will help with the program in making craft items for the kids, like booklets, magnets and name badges. All supplies paid for by Kiwanis of Amador County.
Want to start a Righturn.Club in your area? Thomas will give you all you need to start one, and speak to your local Kiwanis Club to provide the funding. No cost to students. All mentors will be screened for the safety of the kids. Visit www.Righturn.Club to learn more.

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES - The Amador County Artist Association (ACAA) has several benefits to being a member, one of those being Art in Public Places, where the artist can get regular exposure to build a reputation and occasionally make a sale with no commission fees.  This program also gives the location the opportunity to be known for original art on their walls and to promote awareness of original art. The exhibits rotate every 2 months.
Our current locations include Rosebud’s Cafe (downtown Jackson); the Superior Court of CA, County of Amador; American River Bank; Amador Senior Center; Sierra Eye Care; Amador Residential Care; Jackson Paint Spot; and Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione.  Currently, the program has a good balance of artists to locations. New artists and locations are always welcome.  If you would like more information, contact Colleen Williams, Committee Chairperson, colleenwill@volcano.net or (209) 295-2877.

DOCENTS NEEDED for Monteverde Museum. Presently, the museum is only opened two days out of each month.  When the museum is opened we usually have 20 plus visitors a day.  Local folks, visitors, in state and out of state are always happy to be able to go inside the store and experience the feeling of days gone by. Many will say it is like stepping back in time. Many will also say, they have been through Sutter Creek before and to their dismay the store has been closed.
It would be beneficial for Sutter Creek if the museum would be opened more often. Unfortunately, we have a shortage of docents.  Presently, we have only 4 active docents to open the museum. We really need people to volunteer to just have the doors open to the public. If you know of anyone who has free time to do possibly one day a month, or even a few hours one day a month, please let us know.
Still reaching out for other ideas to encourage folks to volunteer time. If you have any ideas please forward to me at rkf48@aol.com

DO YOU HAVE STACKS OF NEWSPAPERS laying around your house, waiting to be recycled? Then please bring them on down to the Busi Parking lot in Jackson behind Mel's. The Boy Scout Troops of Amador County are collecting your newspaper donations and accept on an on-going basis. The large cargo container sits at the very back of the parking lot. There should be pallets next to the dumpster, where everyone can leave their stacks. Anyone can drop off their newspapers 7 days a week, day or night. We ask that you only donate actual newspapers, no glossy advertising, magazines or books. All proceeds directly benefit the various Troops in Amador County. It's a Win-Win for everyone, Scouts, you and the environment! For more information, contact Jenny Fritz at artsychickenfarm@gmail.com
