CAMEL RACES IN VIRGINIA CITY: It is time again for an Amador County Jockey to compete in the 56th International Camel Races, held in Virginia City Nevada. Rich Martin of Plymouth and a local EMT with American Legion Ambulance will be competing against other jockeys from throughout the US and Australia. Martin will be competing to bring home the Governor’s Cup which he won in 2012. For me and my friend Ryan Gillaspie it started as a joke 5 years ago to participate in Camel Racing, but now it has turned into a yearly competition we look forward to every year.
Gillaspie which brought home 2nd Place in 2013 will not be attending as he has a previous commitment . Martin is Thankful for the local support , Rory's Towing has been my sponsor 4 years and continues to support the event. Cooper Winery has been gracious in donating of wines for the Silent Auction which benefits the Children's Home in Carson City, I'd like to give a shout out to both of these businesses for their support.
The 56th Annual Camel Races will be held Sept.11th-13th, in Virginia City, Nv. Gates open at 10 AM and Races begin at HighNoon. Tickets can be purchased online and is recommended as the events draws 1000's of spectators and sells out. Our current locations include Rosebud’s Cafe (downtown Jackson); the Superior Court of CA, County of Amador; American River Bank; Amador Senior Center; Sierra Eye Care; Amador Residential Care; Jackson Paint Spot; and Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione. GET UP TO $300 FOR YOUR OLD WOOD STOVE - Sierra Hearth & Home is proud to announce that it is part of a nationwide effort for cleaner air. Now through August 31st, 2015, during Jøtul North America’s third annual Wood Stove Changeout Program, http://jotul.com/us/CAMPAIGN, consumers can bring their current non-EPA-certified stoves to Sierra Hearth & Home, in exchange for a voucher valued at up to $300* toward any current Jøtul wood or gas stove or fireplace insert. For all vouchers that are redeemed at Sierra Hearth & Home, Jøtul will make a donation to Operation BBQ Relief, http://operationbbqrelief.org/
Old Stoves can be dropped off at Sierra Hearth & Home, 619-B South Hwy 49, Jackson, California between 8:30 am – 9:30 am Monday – Friday, or may be picked up from your home with a scheduled appointment. Non-EPA stoves that are exchanged during the changeout will be rendered unusable and recycled.
Because EPA-certified wood stoves emit approximately 70 percent less pollution than older conventional stoves, owners who make the change from a non-EPA stove can directly affect local air quality. In addition to being environmentally friendly, EPA-certified stoves can be 50 percent more efficient and burn up to 1/3 less wood than older models.
For more information or to schedule a pick up, call Sierra Hearth & Home at 209-223-4007, www.sierrahearthandhome.net

The Amador-Calaveras Consensus Group is a community-based organization that works to create fire-safe communities, healthy forests and watersheds, and sustainable local economies in Amador and Calaveras counties. We started work in 2008, but have never had a proper logo. Now that we're going to have a real website, it's time for us to have a logo, too.
The logo should reflect our mission, above, and our focus on balancing the environment, economy and community. You can read more about the group, its diverse members, and its work here:

DOCENTS NEEDED for Monteverde Museum. Presently, the museum is only opened two days out of each month. When the museum is opened we usually have 20 plus visitors a day. Local folks, visitors, in state and out of state are always happy to be able to go inside the store and experience the feeling of days gone by. Many will say it is like stepping back in time. Many will also say, they have been through Sutter Creek before and to their dismay the store has been closed.
It would be beneficial for Sutter Creek if the museum would be opened more often. Unfortunately, we have a shortage of docents. Presently, we have only 4 active docents to open the museum. We really need people to volunteer to just have the doors open to the public. If you know of anyone who has free time to do possibly one day a month, or even a few hours one day a month, please let us know.
Still reaching out for other ideas to encourage folks to volunteer time. If you have any ideas please forward to me at rkf48@aol.com
AMADOR SENIOR VISITORS PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS. Join a great group of people working in the community to help our Senior Citizens live safer, healthier lives. Please call Eileen at 223-0442 for information about how you can help!
DO YOU HAVE STACKS OF NEWSPAPERS laying around your house, waiting to be recycled? Then please bring them on down to the Busi Parking lot in Jackson behind Mel's. The Boy Scout Troops of Amador County are collecting your newspaper donations and accept on an on-going basis. The large cargo container sits at the very back of the parking lot. There should be pallets next to the dumpster, where everyone can leave their stacks. Anyone can drop off their newspapers 7 days a week, day or night. We ask that you only donate actual newspapers, no glossy advertising, magazines or books. All proceeds directly benefit the various Troops in Amador County. It's a Win-Win for everyone, Scouts, you and the environment! For more information, contact Jenny Fritz at artsychickenfarm@gmail.com
