These critters help provide and manage nutrients for our plants. Improvements in the condition of your garden soil often leads to increased garden productivity. Learn about soil characteristics and methods for using common materials to build soil in a sustainable way at the Public Education class, Building Healthy Soils, provided by the UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County on Saturday, September 21 from 9AM-12 Noon. Handouts will be available. The class is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.  Classes are held in the GSA building at 12200-B Airport Rd in Jackson.

SIERRA MADRE GARDEN CLUB welcomes speaker Janice Hanson, Amador Master Gardener, who will present a program “Growing Succulents Indoors” when the club meets on Tuesday, September 24 at 1:30pm at the Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road in Jackson.  If you’re looking for indoor greenery but have little success with houseplants, succulents may be the answer. They’re easy-to-please houseguests that can survive those dry, indoor environments because of special adaptations that Janice will describe. These living sculptural plants will give you eye-catching foliage, strong, distinct leaf shapes, and striking textures. Come learn how to grow these undemanding plants and keep them alive during the winter months.
Sierra Madre Garden Club invites enthusiastic gardeners to their meetings on the fourth Tuesday of most months. Light refreshments are served.  For further information contact Ed Morin, Vice President of Program, at emorin@volcano.net or 209-296-4502.

AAUW AMADOR CELEBRATES 50 YEARS: The Amador County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is celebrating our first 50 years of service to our community.  AAUW is inviting all current, former and prospective members to join them on Sunday, September 29, from 2 to 4 pm, at the Community Building on Church Street in Sutter Creek to commemorate the occasion.
A quote from a news article published in 1969 when the branch was first organized is still appropriate:  “The organization’s main interests are practical educational work and contributions its members can make to society.” Indeed, our branch can be proud of its past accomplishments and strives towards new goals in the future. We are assembling a photo video showing highlights of the first 50 years.  Most notable is our annual Home Tour that allows us to fund local college scholarships, fellowships, Tech Trek camperships, and provide other educational programs for the community.  Hopefully, some of our scholarship recipients will attend to update us on their educational and career journey.
Questions regarding the celebration may be directed to Sandi Baracco at 209-267-0254 or BaraccoArchitect@comcast.net.  For more information about AAUW see:  amador-ca.aauw.net
