TRAIN TO BECOME AN ADVOCATE FOR FOSTER CHILDREN - Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Amador County will be starting a training for advocates for children starting Monday, July 17.
A volunteer advocate, known as a CASA, after 40 hours of training, are assigned to be a special person in the life of a child who has been neglected or abused.  The court will appoint the CASA to be the eyes and ears of the court and to report back to the court information they have gathered. The CASA will also tell the court what decisions and services may be in the best interest of that child.
The training will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for 3 weeks.
To qualify, you must be 18 years old, willing to donate your time and pass a thorough background check.
CASA of Amador currently has a waiting list of children who are in need of a CASA.

Why not expand into a winter vegetable garden?  Winter gardens require less care than summer gardens and the selection of cool weather vegetables is even greater. The results are not only delicious but also nutritious vegetables.
Join the UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 9am -Noon for their free Public Education class, "Planning for Fall and Winter Gardens". Learn what, when, and how to grow cool weather vegetables.

MOVIE NIGHT AT THE CASTLE: Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 15th and come to Movie Night at the Castle. VIA AMADOR COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPT: Please Beware! Recently, we’ve seen an increase in mail theft and vandalisms from community and privately owned, streetside mailboxes. The thieves have targeted Pioneer, Volcano, and Pine Grove. Please SHARE this post to make your neighbors aware of the problem and keep a watchful eye out for the culprits. If you see a mail thief at work, or believe your mail was stolen, call the Amador County Sheriff’s Office at 209-223-6500. Also as required, please contact the Postal Inspector at 877-876-2455.
Below are some tips from the United States Postal Inspection Service:
• Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
• Don’t send cash in the mail.
• Tell your Post Office when you’ll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.
• Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other's mailboxes (as well as homes).

PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT ~ For individuals dealing with prostate cancer: For some years there has been a monthly meeting providing information and support, held at Sutter Amador hospital.  Now the object is to continue Prostate Cancer support in Amador County but in a changed way. There no longer will be meetings, but contact will be through Sutter Amador Hospital and Jerry Trottier who will provide referrals to men who have been active in the group, had prostate cancer and have had various treatments. They are willing and able to answer questions about their treatments. In this way we will continue to have support in Amador for those who want information about Prostate Cancer.

MINI-GRANT OPPORTUNITIES: The Amador Child Abuse Prevention Council (ACAPC) has funding available for child abuse prevention mini-grant proposals for the 2016-17 fiscal year. One-time mini-grants will be awarded up to $2,000. The Amador Child Abuse Prevention Council has set aside funds towards the goal of contracting with qualified organizations and agencies to provide child abuse prevention services/programs within the County of Amador. Projects eligible for funding include schools, parent groups, non-profit agencies, and community organizations. The Council – a collaboration of county organizations, agencies, and community members – has found that the unmet needs in the area of child abuse prevention include the following focus areas:
•Drug & Alcohol/Substance Abuse Treatment/Prevention
•Parent Education/Parent Support
•Promoting Mental Wellness/Trauma Informed Care
•Developmentally Appropriate Behavior/Developmental Milestones Education
•Neglect/Distracted Parenting and Child Safety

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES - The Amador County Artist Association (ACAA) has several benefits to being a member, one of those being Art in Public Places, where the artist can get regular exposure to build a reputation and occasionally make a sale with no commission fees.  This program also gives the location the opportunity to be known for original art on their walls and to promote awareness of original art. The exhibits rotate every 2 months.
Our current locations include Rosebud’s Cafe (downtown Jackson); the Superior Court of CA, County of Amador; American River Bank; Amador Senior Center; Sierra Eye Care; Amador Residential Care; Jackson Paint Spot; and Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione.  Currently, the program has a good balance of artists to locations. DO YOU HAVE STACKS OF NEWSPAPERS laying around your house, waiting to be recycled? Then please bring them on down to the Busi Parking lot in Jackson behind Mel's. The Boy Scout Troops of Amador County are collecting your newspaper donations and accept on an on-going basis. The large cargo container sits at the very back of the parking lot. There should be pallets next to the dumpster, where everyone can leave their stacks. Anyone can drop off their newspapers 7 days a week, day or night. We ask that you only donate actual newspapers, no glossy advertising, magazines or books. All proceeds directly benefit the various Troops in Amador County.
