SATURDAY AT THE MATINEE - Amador Democrats are proud to present two movies - "The Children's March" and "A Time for Justice" on Saturday, December 5 beginning at 12 Noon.
"The Children's March" tells the story of how the young people of Birmingham, Alabama braved fire hoses and police dogs in 1963 and brought segregation to its knees. Their heroism complements discussions about the ability of today's young people to be catalysts for positive social change.
“In A Time for Justice”, four-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Charles Guggenheim captured the spirit of the civil rights movement through historical footage and the voices of those who participated in the struggle. Narrated by Julian Bond and featuring John Lewis, the 38-minute film allows today’s generation of students to witness firsthand the movement’s most dramatic moments—the bus boycott in Montgomery, the school crisis in Little Rock, the violence in Birmingham and the triumphant 1965 march for voting rights. The film won the Academy Award for Short Documentary 1995. Please join us at the Amador Democrats Headquarters, located in the Mother Lode Plaza, 557 South Highway 49, Suite 3, Jackson. Feel free to bring your lunch. In Unity, Steve Christensen 209-267-0615

CALICO CHRISTMAS IN AMADOR CITY - Saturday, December 5 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. downtown Amador City celebrates Christmas. The town decorates for the season with fresh hand-made pine garlands and Christmas lights hung from century old buildings.
Christmas music will be performed to brighten spirits on old Highway 49 and bring a festive air.
On the patio in front of the Imperial Hotel guests can take in artisan libations to ward off the winter chill.
At 5:30 pm there will be a tree lighting on the bridge over Amador Creek and Christmas carols. Shops will stay open late. Three local winery tasting rooms will welcome visitors.
Throughout the day there will be an array of Christmas comestibles available. Andrae’s Bakery offers an espresso bar, decadent baked goods, artisan breads and Sacramento craft beers.
Buffalo Chips Restaurant renders handmade pies, an old-fashioned soda fountain and great burgers. After the tree lighting they feature a traditional polenta dinner served with Italian chicken sausage and mixed greens, finished with bread pudding and hot buttered rum sauce.
A variety of small bite desserts prepared by classic pastry chef Ingrid Fraser will be available at Feist Wines.
Select stores offer discounts and shoppers can stop by The Kitchen Store for home-made cookies.
Like the textile “calico” from where this celebration gets its name the joy of Amador City is its authenticity and raw, unprocessed nature.

ADVENT AT TRINITY: We light the second blue candle on the Advent Wreath this Sunday, December 6. Contrast this quiet time of reflection on Christ’s message with the violence in our world. VIA THE SCB&PA: THANK YOU TO THE FYOCKS: Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of each day, we forget to express gratitude and thanks. We think it, we just forget to say it...my goal is to become better at this in the coming year (early New Year's resolution?).
In that spirit, I would like to give a big thank you to Bob and Faye Fyock for making and displaying the holiday decorations that you see along both sides of Main St., in Sutter Creek. Truly, I think there are at least 150 or more (today I feel like there might have been 500, LOL). They created, cut the wood, and painted them. They store them year round and repair those that need it. They put them up and then they take them down. I can't tell you how many nice conversations we had with total strangers yesterday as the decorations were being put out.
So thank you Bob and Faye!

Last year, Angel Tree provided holiday gifts to over 700 children between the ages of 0 and 17 years. It is the generosity of folks like you that makes the project so successful! We are currently requesting unwrapped gifts for children of all ages. Angels, printed with a local child’s holiday wish list, are available on Angel Trees at a variety of businesses throughout Amador County. You can sponsor a child by choosing an angel and purchasing a desired gift, or you can make a monetary donation and Community Center staff will purchase the gift on your behalf. In addition, if someone would like to purchase a generic gift to donate, we will do our best to match the gift with the requests of the unsponsored angels.
Please drop off your unwrapped gifts at the Jackson Elks Lodge, the Upcountry Community Center, Camanche Lake Community Center, Clark’s Corner, Pine Grove Video or Wal-Mart by December 14th. As you shop and do business locally, you will find the Angel Trees as well as additional gift drop-off location sites. Thank you so much for your time and generosity. With your help, the children in our community will have a very happy holiday season!
For more information or to sponsor a child, please call 296-2785.-----

RIGHTURN: VOLUNTEERS & MENTORS NEEDED - The Kiwanis Club of Amador County will be sponsoring a Righturn.Club at a local elementary school. We are looking for assistance in getting this off the ground. We need mentors, facilitators, and helpers. The 10 week program, meeting after school twice a week for 90 minutes this fall, will give obese kids the help they need to make a right turn in their eating habits and fitness. If interested contact founder, Thomas Moraitis. Thomas@Righturn.Club.
You don't have to be an athlete, a teacher, or in perfect shape to be a mentor. HS and college students, retired folks, people who have flexible schedules at work are ideal. The helpers will prepare healthy snacks for 40 twice a week, food provided and deliver to school. The facilitators will help with the program in making craft items for the kids, like booklets, magnets and name badges. All supplies paid for by Kiwanis of Amador County.
Want to start a Righturn.Club in your area? Thomas will give you all you need to start one, and speak to your local Kiwanis Club to provide the funding. No cost to students. All mentors will be screened for the safety of the kids. Visit www.Righturn.Club to learn more.

DOCENTS NEEDED for Monteverde Museum. Presently, the museum is only opened two days out of each month. When the museum is opened we usually have 20 plus visitors a day. Local folks, visitors, in state and out of state are always happy to be able to go inside the store and experience the feeling of days gone by. Many will say it is like stepping back in time. Many will also say, they have been through Sutter Creek before and to their dismay the store has been closed.
It would be beneficial for Sutter Creek if the museum would be opened more often. Unfortunately, we have a shortage of docents. Presently, we have only 4 active docents to open the museum. We really need people to volunteer to just have the doors open to the public. If you know of anyone who has free time to do possibly one day a month, or even a few hours one day a month, please let us know.
Still reaching out for other ideas to encourage folks to volunteer time. If you have any ideas please forward to me at rkf48@aol.com

DO YOU HAVE STACKS OF NEWSPAPERS laying around your house, waiting to be recycled? Then please bring them on down to the Busi Parking lot in Jackson behind Mel's. The Boy Scout Troops of Amador County are collecting your newspaper donations and accept on an on-going basis. The large cargo container sits at the very back of the parking lot. There should be pallets next to the dumpster, where everyone can leave their stacks. Anyone can drop off their newspapers 7 days a week, day or night. We ask that you only donate actual newspapers, no glossy advertising, magazines or books. All proceeds directly benefit the various Troops in Amador County. It's a Win-Win for everyone, Scouts, you and the environment! For more information, contact Jenny Fritz at artsychickenfarm@gmail.com
