CAL FIRE: Lightning Complex

Lightning Complex Camino – During the past 24 hours, extreme lightning activity in the Amador-El Dorado Unit (AEU) of CAL FIRE has resulted in increased staffing levels across the unit.  There were 1848 lightning strikes in 12 hours and as a result, there have been 16 wildland fires on state responsibility area lands with more expected to surface as the affected areas dry out.

“Firefighting personnel are aggressively suppressing wildland fires in very rugged and often isolated areas covered in timber.  Fires in these outlying areas are a challenge to get to but with the assistance of our air program, we can slow down the fire until ground units arrive” says Incident Commander Brian Estes. Due to this recent thunderstorm activity and current weather forecasts, Unit Chief Kelly Keenan wanted to remind everyone of some basic lightning safety tips:

  • Lightning bolts can strike 10-15 miles from a thunderstorm
  • If you hear thunder then lightning is close enough to be a real threat, seek shelter indoors
  • Lightning does strike the same place twice
  • If you are caught outside during a thunderstorm, move towards a safe shelter
  • The safest shelter is a building with wiring and plumbing.  Sheds, picnic shelters, tents or covered porches do NOT necessarily protect you from lightning
  • Do not use corded telephones unless absolutely necessary
  • Wait for 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder is heard to resume outside activities

Annually 400 people are struck by lightning in the US and about 60 people die from their injuries, the rest can face a lifetime of disabilities including pain and neurological disabilities.

“The best idea is to err on the side of caution, go indoors and stay there until the thunderstorm has passed.  Safety should be priority one for you and your family” adds Chief Keenan.  For more information on lightning safety visit www.weather.gov/os/lightning/ and remember “when thunder roars go indoors.” # # # Teri Mizuhara, Unit Public Information OfficerFire Prevention Specialist II CAL FIREAmador-El Dorado Unit 530.647.5239  desk530.708.2724  cell530.647.5276   fax

Thinking about Patti...

There are some pains that are bearable, some that are semi-bearable. But knowing that one of the greatest human beings I've ever known in my life has passed on to bigger and better things in the Universe brings special kinds of tears to my eyes that identify what is unbearable...and Patti Busch was one of those human beings.

My random thoughts, in much grief...

To me, Patti was a quiet storm. Her voice and opinions carried much weight, nothing ever trivial, always with a grace that was truly her own. I loved my time with her before whatever community meeting du jour we were "partners in crime" with. I listened intently to her advice, her counsel, her ideas...and I never had to worry about anything with Patti at the helm. She was always on it, and then some. But what I admired most about her was that she always spoke the plain truth, whether it hurt or not. She was real...never plastic, never a fake, never a schmoozer, never a facade that came up to you in want of something. I always loved her ability to fire back reality checks with unequivocable wisdom and grace.

We talked a lot, off the record. I never had to question her; with Patti, there were never questions, only answers. In my worried weaknesses, I could always count on her to get me back on track. What does worrying accomplish? I needed a graceful swan like Patti in my life...beautiful, radiant, gliding on the surface...but what you didn't see was the "underwater" activity of a brilliant heart, mind and soul.

Patti was not only the face and icon of The Celtic Knot, but of Jackson and Amador County...and was always so very accomodating of me on my random, caffeinated appearances! Didn't have to, but I always apologized for my bloody Welsh heritage as I would browse their wares...and she, of course, was always forgiving! Hahaha. What an amazing store. What an amazing woman. What amazing memories.

She was one of the beautiful faces in a crowd, and supportive of talent. I remember when beloved Kay was dying, when Meghan and I were plunking around on the piano and singing...Patti was watching us from the kitchen, smiling her beautiful smile. I could always tell that she loved and appreciated musical talent. I can only imagine that both Patti and Kay are waiting for us lowly Earthlings do the music of Heaven justice. For me, there are no words...just music. For Patti, I think she could hear the frequency channels of both Heaven and Earth.

I wrote a piano solo many years ago, and it had remained untitled until now.  Through my thoughts, prayers and tears, I think I now have a title for it:

Patti.

VIA CITIZEN REPORT: CONSUMER ALERT - DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE ISSUES WARNING REGARDING BOGUS CHECKS

Questionable Checks Should Be Verified or Reported

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) today announced that some checks bearing the name of the Department and purportedly signed by the Insurance Commissioner are fraudulent.

Recently, checks have been circulated and presented as a “payment” or “refund” from the CDI; however, the Department does not issue checks such as these and is warning consumers and businesses to be on alert if they are presented with a check of this type.

Investigators report that the fraudulent checks have been found in Southern California and five other states, with values between $2,000 and $5,000.

Any consumer or business that questions the validity of a check, or persons with information about this fraudulent activity, should contact the CDI at (909) 919-2200.

CAL FIRE: Buy It Where You Burn It

Camino – Firewood can transport insects and/or disease that are often times not visible to people which means you can end up spreading pests (insects) and diseases that can devastate our local forests if you buy and move firewood from outside our county into our county. CAL FIRE and the CA Firewood Task Force are asking the general public to buy only locally cut firewood where they plan to burn it.Furthermore, if you plan on camping and travelling outside the area, get your firewood from the area you are going too, do not transport wood from your backyard as you may be spreading diseases and pests and leave unburned firewood where you bought it.

Examples of insects and diseases that can affect the forests in our area are:

The Goldspotted Oak Borer (an invasive beetle in San Diego County likely brought into the state on firewood) has killed tens of thousands of oak trees all over San Diego County since 2004 when it was first found.

Sudden Oak Death is a disease found on the CA coast and as far east as Solano County and has killed tanoaks and oaks from British Columbia to California.

Pine Pitch Canker is a disease affecting pine trees (Grey Pines and Douglas Fir and threatening commercial species such as Sugar Pine and Ponderosa Pine) and has been found along most of the California coast encompassing over 23 million acres.

“By taking simple steps to prevent the spread of insects and disease living in your firewood, you can keep our forests healthy and productive. Anyone of these diseases can potentially devastate our forests leaving behind acres of dead and dying trees primed for wildfires, not to mention the adverse economic ramifications” cautions Unit Chief Kelly Keenan of the Amador-El Dorado Unit of CAL FIRE “so please buy your firewood where you plan on burning it” adds Chief Keenan.

NAMI Amador Raises $3800 in Northern California NAMI Walk

Two teams from Amador County joined Northern California NAMI Walks for the first time this year to raise funds to provide support services in Amador County for families and their members with mental illness.

Senate pro tem leader Darrell Steinberg gave spoke movingly of the need for better mental health services, and family fun, the Nickel Slots band, plus Sacramento’s classiest food trucks kept everyone entertained.
Thanks to the generosity of family, friends and other Amador residents they raised over $6000, and brought back $3800 for programs and educational classes to Amador County. With 115 teams and 1500 walkers participating, NAMI Amador’s teams were 7th and 8th top fundraisers. Including corporate sponsors, the Walk raised over $150,000.

NAMI Amador members plan to make this an annual event, and are looking forward to next year.

Amador County Fair Provides Eclectic Entertainment for All Ages

PLYMOUTH, CA. Where else, but the Amador County Fair can you meet a wheelwright who traveled the United States by covered wagon and a rifle-toting Mountain Man shopping on the midway, then listen to a unique Celtic rock band called Tempest or the city sounds of Maxx Cabello Jr.? Then The Spazmatics (who just got some notoriety for playing at Drew Barrymore's wedding) take you back to the eighties.

The Amador County Fair, July 26-29th, is an amazing collection of old and new, traditional and trendy. You can gorge on the once-a-year guilty pleasure of Fair Food, then taste fine award-winning wines with the Amador Winegrowers on Friday night, or hoist a microbrew at the Brew Tastings on the weekend.

“We have to keep things fresh and exciting for our Fair visitors,” says Troy Bowers, CEO of the Fair. “But we need to keep our traditions alive as well. The Fairgrounds is a living history museum that we don’t want to abandon.”

He is speaking of the permanent exhibits that are as much a part of the Amador County Fair as the carnival and corn dogs.  Visitors flock to see the turn of the century sawmill using steam power to cut massive logs, to watch as ore is stamped at the Pokerville Gold Mine, or to see the Mountain Men reenact an old saloon fight.  Alongside the whirling, twirling neon of the carnival, the daily antique tractor parade chugs along.

As usual there are hours of fun things for kids to do that don’t cost parents a nickel, including free admission on Thursday until 6:00 pm. All kinds of fun activities await in the 49er Kids Town, they can laugh and learn how to juggle with the Jumbo Shrimp Circus and they can learn about Amador County’s Miwok culture under the willow-branch-covered round lodge, where they can make and take home a craft project.  At the Gold Mine they can pan for gold, though they probably won’t end up rich!

There’s a charge for entertainment in the Grandstands Friday through Sunday, but that won’t stop capacity crowds at the Truck Pulls on Friday night, the Rodeo on Saturday and the packed Destruction Derby on Sunday.  Buying your reserved seat in advance is a good idea. Thursday night the arena will host the Mutton Bustin’ preliminary round with the finalists going on to compete during the rodeo. "Pay What You Can" donations are requested to watch the Mutton Bustin'.

The Fair wouldn’t be the Fair without everyone in Amador County working, volunteering, or dropping by.  From manning service club booths, to monitoring buildings, to sponsoring various items and activities, residents of Amador County are very involved in the annual event.  The exhibit halls are filled with art, quilts, baked goods, preserves, needle arts, plants and flowers, gems and minerals, and Junior projects.  The barns bustle with animals tended by 4-H and FFA youth, show rings, and with parents not far away making sure all is well.

Tickets are available on line and you can save on Fair admission and Carnival rides. Reserved seats for Grandstand Events and the Wine Tasting on Friday night are available in advance as well. For more information about the Amador County Fair, July 26-29th, visit www.amadorcountyfair.com.

CAL FIRE: Heat Related Fires and More

CAL FIRE: Heat Related Fires and More

Camino – “With hot summer weather upon us, everyone needs to be pay attention to what can cause a fire, either in a structure or outdoors, and work towards preventing a fire” cautions Unit Chief Kelly Keenan of the Amador-El Dorado Unit of CAL FIRE.  “There are several large fires burning in the northern part of California which are causing a drawdown of our firefighting resources, this means we may have less equipment to respond to a local fire.  It is everyone’s responsibility to be extra vigilant at times like this” adds Chief Keenan.

Things to check for that may cause a fire:

Old electrical wiring or illegal electrical work can overheat and cause a fire when there is an increased demand on the wiring due to hot summer days.  Have a licensed electrician make sure your wiring is up to code.

Debris piles that were not extinguished completely, they can smolder underground for day, weeks or even months then surface and cause a wildland fire which can catch your home on fire.  Check old burn piles and make sure they are not still hot.  Use a shovel and lots of water to drown the fire out.  Don't forget, burn permits have been suspended.

Make sure propane tanks are properly installed and maintained.  Contact your propane dealer for advice.  If you use a small propane tank for your barbeque, make sure it is properly installed and maintained.  If it’s in need of repair, don’t delay.

Properly store and secure all flammable liquids such as gasoline, propane, linseed oil, etc.  Do not store them in a garage that is attached to your home.

Do not use a riding lawn mower to cut dead, dry weeds as this can cause the lawn mower to catch fire as well as the wildland.  They are designed to cut green grass not dead vegetation.

Make sure all gas powered equipment (chainsaws, weed eaters, lawn mowers, etc.) are in good working order including a spark arrestor.  Do not use gas powered equipment after 10 am or before 7 pm, in fact when the weather is extremely hot, do not operate gas powered equipment at all, wait for cooler weather to arrive.

Do not drive off into the weeds as your vehicles hot exhaust system can cause a fire when it comes into contact with the underside of your car, truck, ATV, etc.

Never leave food cooking on a stovetop or in an oven unattended.  If you must leave, take a timer, or cooking implement with you to remind yourself.  Cooking fires cause nearly 90% of kitchen fires.

Never leave candles or incense burning unattended.  Blow out the candle or incense before leaving the room, even for a few minutes.

Make sure your electrical outlet is not overloaded and use surge protectors as needed.

Never run electrical cords under throw rugs or area carpets.  Do not string two pronged extension cords end to end to reach an appliance, television, etc.  They are not designed for this use and can overheat and cause a fire.  Invest in a grounded (three prong) extension cord that is designed for your needs.

“I strongly encourage everyone to take a few minutes and walk through your home and garage and make sure it is fire safe.  If you find that there are things you need to correct, get them done now before it is too late.  CAL FIRE is always ready to respond to emergencies of any kind 24/7, but it is heartbreaking when we see someone’s home destroyed by a fire that could have been prevented” says Chief Keenan.

For more information on fire and life safety, go to CAL FIRE’s website at www.fire.ca.gov or contact CAL FIRE at(530) 644-2345 for free fire prevention materials.
