Greetings!
An interesting report from the U.S. chamber of Commerce:
This report dovetails in with the abuses of the Equal Access
to Justice Act (EAJA) by litigious litigants who have and are continuing to
abuse the EAJA…with taxpayers footing the ensuing bill.
This ongoing filing of multiple lawsuits under
EAJA has disrupted the activity of the U.S. Forest Service to such an
extent as to cause gridlock in the management of our National Forests,
part of the collateral damage coming from this gridlock is the continuing
occurrence of huge catastrophic fires in our National Forests, not to
mention the huge economic hit to rural areas
I believe the (EAJA) was legislated with good intentions, it
has just been severely abused and needs major modifications, especially under
the recovery of "costs".
I would like to see Congress step up to the plate
and address the issues brought out in this report and the ongoing issue with
EAJA lawsuits.

As the primary market for Amador County’s
local farms, more and more people are shopping for local fruit and produce at
our local market sites.
As the market enters its third month of providing fresh and
local agricultural products, record numbers of shoppers have attended the
markets in Pine Grove, Jackson,
and Sutter Creek.
The Rotary Club of Plymouth-Foothills is once again
sponsoring the Plymouth Farmer’s Market, held every Thursday, 4 pm to 7:00 pm,
from Aug 1st, through Sep 29th, at McGee
Park on Main Street in Plymouth. Featuring many of our local small
family farms, the Plymouth Farmer’s Market has become popular gathering place
for folks from Plymouth,
Fiddletown, River Pines, Drytown, Ione and more.
Amador County Famers Market plays an important role in our
communities and towns. It’s where we go to buy fresh eggs, fruits, vegetables,
and baked goods. All of our markets also have craft vendors and artists. I go
to every Farmers Market I can, not just for the food but also to get to the
essence of community.
It’s a place where I can see my neighbors, meet new friends,

Amador Master Gardeners present part 3 of Growing Great
Vegetables from 9am to 12 noon on August 17th.
Emily Beals, Master Gardener and organic farmer in Mt. Aukum
will present information to help get that fall vegetable garden growing, in
addition to discussing such topics as crop rotation and cover crops.
This free class includes standard and worm composting techniques
as well as mulching.

KIRKWOOD: ANNUAL 5K/10K & KIDS’RUN PLANNED FOR AUG 31
This fun event has been taking place in Kirkwood each Labor Day weekend for 33 years
and is planned for August 31, 2013. Presented by the Tahoe Mountain
Milers and sponsored by Kirkwood Mountain Resort and the Kirkwood Volunteer
Fire Department, the 10K trail adventure run follows single track and dirt road
3 miles up the mountain to an elevation of 8,200 feet. The 5K road run
includes 1/4 mile of single track with a log crossing. Unique ceramic medals
are awarded to all finishers. For kids, there is a 1/2 mile and a 1 mile
fun run; kids make their own medals. Event day shirts will be available for
sale as long as supplies last. The Grand Prize drawing for a Kirkwood Downhill
Pass for 2013-2014 and a Kirkwood Cross Country
Ski Pass
takes place just before noon; you must be present to win. Gather your

Early registration prior to August 19 costs $30; after that the cost is $35

NOTE! The upcoming August 12 Jackson City Council meeting will
include an important discussion regarding the future disposal of the City’s treated
wastewater effluent. The City’s wastewater treatment plant currently
discharges all of the effluent it produces into Jackson
Creek, however, the City has been
working for over a decade on planning activities to irrigate pastureland to
reduce the amount of effluent that flows through the creek to Lake Amador.
This was a requirement in the City’s wastewater permit issued by the State
Regional Water Quality Control Board at the urging of the State Department of Public
Health.
Recent projects in
the Lake Amador
area completed and funded for the Jackson Valley Irrigation District will now
bring water from Lake
Pardee to this area to
serve potable water needs. Recognizing the original intent of Lake Amador
to be used for irrigation purposes, the DPH has informed the State Water
Quality Control Board that the dilution requirement it previously requested (no
more than 5% of the lake content should be treated effluent) was no longer
necessary.
These changes have
allowed the City of Jackson
to reconsider how it manages its wastewater effluent. Early indications
are that the cost will be less to improve the wastewater treatment process
rather than construct an irrigation system and the pump system required to
deliver the treated effluent to land for irrigation.
The discussion on
Monday night will include a review of the City’s options, potential impact on
rates, and direction from the City Council will be provided to staff on how to
proceed. Information about the options will be on the City’s website on Friday
afternoon in the City Council agenda packet. The website also has a
“virtual tour” of the current wastewater operation. Any rate increases
associated with the cost of the improvements required to meet water quality
standards will be subject to the Proposition 218 process when more specific
cost data is available.

Since the numbers in the Bands all across the district have grown recently, the District has run out of instruments to loan. So, the Band Program is holding an instrument donation drive sponsored by the Amador Community Foundation. The Kickoff event is a fun afternoon/evening of food and music at the Amador Ridge Shopping Plaza. From 3:00-9:00 PM Dickey’s, Roundtable, Oko Sushi, Yogurt Your Way and Jamba Juice will donate 10% of their sales to the Band A.I.D.E. project. At 6:30 PM, the combined high school bands will perform a short pep band concert at the Plaza. You can bring an instrument and or money to donate to the drive, or just eat at the restaurants and help out that way. Going out to eat at your favorite Amador Ridge restaurant, hearing the pep bands and helping put an instrument into the hands of a student – what a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

IN AMADOR COUNTY: The University of California Cooperative Extension Central
Sierra is recruiting for a 40 percent time 4H Program Representative in Amador
County. This position will be a part of
a team that provides leadership, guidance, and coordination for the Central
Sierra 4-H Program. The program representative will recruit, orient and provide
ongoing assistance and training for 4-H Volunteer Leaders, Parents and Youth.
The program representative will work to promote 4-H and recruit youth members
for existing clubs, and start new clubs. The program representative will be
very familiar with and knowledgeable about 4-H policies and youth development
issues, and will assist volunteer leaders to implement policies and enhance
youth development experiences. The 4-H Program Representative will serve as the
4-H staff liaison with volunteer leadership groups including 4-H County and
District councils.
